On 10 April 2026, NEC Energy Coalition, in collaboration with EUREC and Hanze UAS, organized a field excursion for 34 Renewable Energy students from the Energy Master’s programs. Together with local businesses and REFORMERS partners, students gained a unique, firsthand look at how integrated energy systems are being implemented in practice.
The focus was on the pivotal role of regional energy hubs in building a robust and sustainable energy system. At ECW Energy, students observed how a closed distribution system connects renewable sources and major consumers, such as data centers, within a local energy network.
The visit to InVesta Expertise Centre provided deeper insights into the REFORMERS project, highlighting innovation and scalability. Students also explored practical applications, including Sustenso’s algae installation and the technologies developed by DOPS.
In addition, the Rainbow Colors BV company showcased how integrated energy systems come together: solar energy, battery storage, and thermal energy storage systems are being monitored and managed in real time. The company is also working to integrate a 1 MW solid-oxide electrolyzer for green hydrogen production.
Reflecting on the experience, one student remarked, “It made me think about trying to better understand the business opportunities and value creation potential of renewable energy, so that it becomes more attractive for different industries to adopt. If this is achieved, the transition at an industrial level could happen faster, without the need to force it.”
