The University

Do you want to share your energy talent to move to a sustainable world? Then, the European Master in Renewable Energy at Hanze University of Applied Sciences is something for you!
EUREC selected Hanze UAS to be the first University of Applied Sciences to offer the Master in Renewable Energy, because of its good facilities and research in the field of energy.  It boasts extensive professional and academic networks both in and outside the Netherlands.

The North of the Netherlands has sublime expertise on energy transition. With many years of experience in gas transitions, this part of the country is a true energy region and has a huge national and international energy network. Hanze UAS is situated in the centre of this energy valley; it is the top sector in energy. The European Master in Renewable Energy is linked to the New Energy Coalition. This is a merger of Energy Valley Foundation, Energy Delta Institute and the Energy Academy Europe-organisation. Top education, top research and business come together in this New Energy Coalition.

Do you want to become a renewable energy engineer? Study at the Hanze University of Applied Sciences!

Teaching Methods

Modules:

  • Processes,models and modelling sustainable fuel production and supply chain(s).This module addresses the optimization of chains by modelling it with a set of constraints (e.g. economic parameters). Lab tools (e.g. modellica) will be used for assignments about constraint based optimization of chains.
  • Biochemical Conversion. This module aims to give a broad understanding in the various biological processes involved in the conversion of biomass into biofuels. Biomass can be converted into various types of biofuels, including Bio-methane, Bio-ethanol, Bio-hydrogen and Bio-diesel. In addition, end-use specifications for biofuels are addressed, since biofuels have different properties than conventional fuels, with a goal to ensure clean and efficient utilization. Basic Biochemistry - The making of renewable fuels - The use of biofuels
  • Thermochemical conversion. This module will cover the relevant methods to convert biomass into biofuels through thermochemical conversion. The processes and conditions will be described with their mass and energy balances and efficiency. Practical experiences and status of the developments will be outlined. Good and bad combinations of technology and feedstock will be explained. The economy of the processes will shortly be touched upon. Other subjects covered in this module include: modelling, chemical analyses, reactor design. Finally, some new developments will be described. The following processes are covered: Gasification, Torrefaction, Flash pyrolysis, Hydrothermallique faction.
  • New Business Development. This module will present the context factors of sustainable fuel systems. It will cover European and international law and regulations (what is allowed under what conditions; how about liability), system modeling (when apply, what, why, consequences), as well as outline the systematics of feasibility studies of possible solutions. The aim is to deepen the knowledge of the ‘softer side’ of renewable fuel systems, with topics as:
  1.  Performing and interpreting life cycle -analyses, -design and -engineering;
  2. Provisioning an overview of legal aspects (law and regulations) and Environmental Impact Analyses (EIA) of fuel systems and mobility in Europe (production and use) and risks associated with fuel production, storage and use;
  3. Overview of the concepts of sustainability,cradle-to-cradle, circular economy, resource management and ‘time’ in relationship to energy transition, fuel and mobility;- Awareness of the aspects of systems dimensions:regional, national, European and beyond;
  4. Awareness of the aspects and issues in the social acceptance of sustainable fuels. The other (main) part of this module applies theory into practice by performing application project(s) such as Algae, Biochemical.

Job perspectives

The specialisation connects several major industrial sectors: energy, chemistry, and food. The policy forms a crucial boundary condition and is expected to remain important for biomass/biofuels developments for some time. The graduated student can be employed at companies over the entire fuel chain, not only in R&D related work, but also in application related work or as entrepreneur or as high-level employee.

Anticipated work environments and companies

Organizations that will benefit from this EUREC specialisation and thus may act as future employers are:
  • Energy companies, chemical and petrochemical companies, equipment suppliers, EPC Companies,
  • Consultancy companies, waste/biomass supply and trading companies, catalyst suppliers and institutes that specialize in R&D related to these companies.
  • Governments and advising bodies will be possible future employers dealing with regulatory affairs, policy making and proposal evaluation.
Career possibilities in:
  • Automotive industry (combustion)
  • Space and aerospace industry
  • Fuel producing industry
  • Chemical industry
  • Energy OEM market (bio/sustainable/fossil)
Research Activities

Hanze University of Applied Sciences Energy Research Center is the biggest knowledge institute in the north of the Netherlands. The focus is on strategic themes: Healthy, Ageing and Energy. Professorships and schools are carrying out applied research, bringing discoveries into development.
Fossil energy is increasingly scarce and does not help to reach the goals of reducing CO2 production. Renewable energy is not predictable. How to develop new energy systems that can meet the demand?
The Energy Research Center was founded in 2005 and led by Dr. Wim van Gemert, Professor in Energy transition. His philosophy is that the people in power support consumers in their energy needs and in an increasingly sustainable manner.

Subjects of research to make this happen are:

  • Balancing at the house level, smart appliances, demand side management
  • Smart electricity grid
  • Co-generation appliances, balancing with gas
  •  Balancing at neighbourhood level
  • Conversion options with Hydrogen
  • Balancing with biogas
  • Energy storage
Some major projects running recently can be found on www.en-tran-ce.org. EnTranCe is the hotspot from Hanze University to carry out applied sciences for businesses and innovations. It has the facilities, technologies and the best possible network to develop plans into the energy products and services, and the energy market demands.

Visa, insurance and other practical matters

As a prospective international student you are on the doorstep of a great adventure: studying and living in the Netherlands. Although this is an amazing experience, it can be quite difficult finding your way through the rules and regulations, from applying for a study programme until your journey to the Netherlands. The International Service Desk (ISD) will assist you from start to finish. They can help you with practical matters, such as obtaining a visa and getting the right health insurance.

WARNING: non-EU applicants must follow the requirements of the International Service Desk for visa procedures. Hanze UAS has to prove to the IND that you can pay the tuition fee and that you have sufficient funds to live off before an immigration procedure is started. In order to prove this we ask our future students to transfer both the living costs as well as the tuition fee. Please find more information about the financial guarantee on this website.
